Something For Everyone
“When have you had tempeh?” Dan says.
“At Red Bamboo that one time,” I say.
“Oh yeah,” Dan says.
“Ok, so no tempeh,” Miriam says.
“What about the heirloom bean salad?” Dan suggests.
“Yeah that sounds like it’ll be good,” Josh agrees.
“Ok, so how many apps is that….beans, buffalo wings, bruschetta, mac ‘n’ cheese…two more.” Dan says.
“We could do one protein and one carb, or a protein and a veggie, or a veggie and a carb.” Josh calculates.
“The collard greens sound good,” Miriam says.
“Too bitter. So sorry,” I say. “I’m like really sensitive to bitter.”
“That’s ok. There are lots of other options,” she says.
“What about the broccoli with the dijon sauce?” I say. “Is that ok with everyone?”
“Yep,” says Josh and Dan.
“And for the last one, what about the quinoa salad? That’s like sorta carb but sorta protein.” Miriam says.
“Sounds good,” Dan says.
“Now for the mains.” I say.
“Well we’re doing the soysage sandwich.” Miriam says.
“Ok,” I say.
“Wait, a lot of the mains are just bigger portions of the tapas.” Dan says.
“Um, well at least that narrows it down…What about the seitan and veggies kabob?” I say to Dan.
“I’m not really into that. What about the seitan banh mi sandwich?” Dan says.
“I love banh mi, but I wasn’t sure you’d be into the seitan.” I say.
“It’s ok. I think it’ll be good.” he says.
The waitress comes back. “Can I take your order?”
“We’ll have the soysage sandwich, the banh mi as the mains to split,” Josh leads.
“The soysage cheesesteak special is a small plate portion,” the waitress says.
Miriam and Dan groan.
“Ok we’ll replace the broccoli with the cheesesteak,” Miriam asserts. “And then Josh, do you want to get the vegetarian chili?” she asks.
“Ok,” Josh says.
“So for the mains we’ll have the banh mi and the chili. For the small plates, we’ll do the heirloom beans, mac ‘n’ cheese, quinoa salad, soysage cheesesteak, buffalo wings and the bruschetta.” Josh orders.
“Does that sound like too much food?” Miriam asks.
“Well, it’s half of a main and one and a half appetizers for each person,” the waitress calculates. “It’s a good amount if you’re hungry.”
“Ok, sounds good.” Dan says.
“Would anyone like a drink?” the waitress asks.
“What beers do you have?” Josh asks.
“Blue Point Hoptical Illusion, Blue Point Toasted, Hoegaarden, Stella and Guinness on tap.”
“Anything in bottles?” Dan says.
“No, we only serve beers on tap and try to have a variety of different types. Today we have an IPA, a lager, a wheat beer, a lighter lager and a stout,” the waitress says.
“I’ll actually have a glass of your pinot noir,” Miriam says.
“I’ll do the Guinness,” Josh says.
“A Hoegaarden, please,” I say.
“Well since you only have one choice for IPA’s, I guess I’ll have to have the Hoptical Illusion,” Dan says.
